How Long Should Rattan Furniture Last?

If you’re looking to buy some new rattan furniture, you’ll want to make sure it’s a worthwhile investment and will last. And while the durability might change depending on synthetic or genuine plant fibres – you’ll still be looking for it to last a few years at the minimum.

How Is It Made?

To understand rattan furniture and its durability, it’s best to get grips with how it’s made and the different types.

PE Rattan or known as Polyethylene Rattan is one of the UK’s favourite furniture materials as it’s durable, flexible and at a cheaper price point.

And as you might have guessed the majority of the material is plastic based with coatings and additives to make the material last longer in the sun and humidity.

Natural rattan furniture is made from plants that usually grow in the tropics and are harvested, cut down, and processed to be used in the production of different rattan furniture.

Location, Location, Location?

Indoor rattan furniture has had a recent surge in popularity thanks to Japandi, the design ethos of sleek and airy rooms with minimalist design but practicality still a focus.

The biggest factor determining how long your indoor rattan furniture will last is the location of the furniture.

Most rattan furniture can last up to 10 years if looked after but if your furniture is placed in the conservatory, where the sun exposure is prolonged it’s likely to fade and tear quicker than if it was in your landing or bedroom.

Another factor is how busy that room can be, if it’s a busy environment where you’re doing a lot of welcoming like a hallway, it’s likely to be bumped into or knocked against a wall leading to the weaves cracking and coming loose.

Invest In Protection

To maximise your investment there are always the basics that should be followed and that’s cleaning and dusting at regular intervals.

When cleaning you can use a gentle amount of polish if required but the majority of cleaning will be done with a damp cloth, just make sure there’s no standing water on the furniture afterwards as this can lead to damp issues which will need to be treated with an antifungal or bleach.

To go one step extra and a few years to your rattan furniture you should invest in a decent cover and cushions, make sure to wash these as well. This will not only provide some pressure relief for your furniture but also add comfort to any user over prolonged use.

If your rattan furniture is made from natural fibres, we would suggest using linseed oil and a brush to add some moisture to prevent cracking, doing this every year is the best practice.
